Servito, New Superintendent Eligible
Congratulations! We are proud of you!
These greetings from far and near burned the lines — mobile and landline phones, fax, text and facebook messages — as the results of the July 2010 Educational Management Test (EMT) otherwise known as superintendent Exam was given out recently through DepEd Memo No. 425 Series No. 2010, posted on www.deped.gov.ph.
The big news spread as fast as lightning through the worldwide wed. Dr. Lourdes D. Servito, mother of ‘Tres Marias” — Maria Dolour, Journa Liz, and Maria April of the SERVITO KSS Family, passed the said exam. She is the lone qualifier from the entire province of Pangasinan (Pangsinan I and II).
There were only three (3) passers from Region I as revealed by the Deped memo issued Sept. 30: Dr. Servito, a secondary school principal, Calasiao; Mario S. Cariño, administrative officer, Sn. Carlos City; and William E. Gando, district supervisor, Dagupan City.
Nineteen (19) examinees qualified out of around 900 contenders, based on the cut-off percent score of fifty-eight (58) set by the Executive Committee for this year’s Superintendent Exam.
Sources stated that in the 2008 EMT, the cut-off score was fifty-two (52) and the qualifiers were around 100, most of whom are now assigned as Schools Division Superintendent (SDS) or Assistant Schools Disivion Superintendent (ASDS) in different school and city divisions in the country.

Servito’s KSS Center holds Speech and Public Speaking Camp
The Servito’s KSS Learning Center conducted a speech and public speaking camp where nine learners aged 10 years old and above successfully completed the 7-day camp which concluded August 2010.
Lecturers were sisters Maria Dolour Servito-Navarra and Journa Liz Servito-Navarra who presented lessons on English phonetics, intonation, pronunciation, stress, and a couple more that would improve their speech. They also motivated the learners to overcome their fear of public speaking, gain and build their self-confidence, and deliver speeches appropriately.
Dr. Lourdes D. Servito, KSS Consultant likewise gave a powerpoint presentation on public speaking.

Servito sisters conduct Journalism Summer Camp
The Servito tres marias, Maria Dolour Servito-Navarra, Journa Liz Servito-Ramirez, and Maria April Sunday Servito who were all graduates of communications and journalism conducted a Journalism writing camp at the SERVITO’s KSS Learning Center, May 18-21, 2010.
The eight penpushers were taught news writing, feature writing, editorial writing, copy reading and headlining, photojournalism, cartooning, and lay outing. They were also asked to write articles, draw editorial cartoons, and layout pictures with their own captions which all underwent editing and critiquing.
Jerald Maningding, one of the attendees, stressed that the said journalism camp was more “detailed and comprehensible” than the other journalism workshops he had participated in. On the other hand, Miss Jennalyn Hernandez, an elementary school teacher commented that the lecturers are “very competitive.”
Note: The next Journalism Writing Camp is scheduled on September 2010.

KSS Center holds Public Speaking and Speech Improvement Summer Camp
The SERVITO’s KSS Learning Center held a Public Speaking and Speech Summer Camp for students and adults last May 25-28, 2010.
The said program which was the first of its kind in the town of Calasiao was attended by six eager students; where they learned English phonetics, how to improve their pronunciation, diction, accent,and intonation. They were also taught how to gain and build self-confidence, and overcome fear specially when speaking in public. Proper speech delivery which included appropriate hand and body gestures, facial expressions, and rapport building, was likewise discussed.
The four-day camp was highlighted by an exciting practicum where the enrollees delivered speeches in front of an audience which included their lecturers Maria Dolour Servito-Navarra and Journa Liz Servito-Ramirez who are both graduates of Communications & Journalism at the Brigham Young University-Hawaii.
The next Speech Improvement and Public Speaking Program is scheduled on July 10- Aug. 21, Saturday classes only.

The WRITING CAMP is designed to discover the writing potentials and enhance journalistic writing skills and literary/creative writing skills, too. The SPEECH CAMP will provide opportunities and learning experiences that will enhance speaking abilities before small or large audiences. Participants will be drilled on correct sounds of English thereby improving their pronunciation, enunciation and diction. Their confidence in speech delivery will then be prevalent.
The READING CAMP will showcase a variety of book nooks to make reading fun and comfortable for kids. Participants will be engaged in reading books according to their level and interest to boost their reading and language skills, leading to improved learner performance and increased self-esteem in and out of the classroom.

KSS TO THE NEXT LEVEL
Success is a choice! That is the SERVITO’S KSS Learning Center’s battlecry.
Where KSS means Knowledge and Skills for Success, this study center which is a dream-
come-true for a family of education lovers, has moved to the next level.
From its original nook at the groundfloor of the STS Bldg., Mc Arthur Highway,
Calasiao, Pangasinan, it has moved up to its second floor, for a more spacious and more
conducive area for learning.
To accommodate an increasing number of tutees, students and professionals who
avail of KSS offerings – tutorage for all levels, speech training, campus journalism
workshops, reading program, memorology, and the International English Language
program, KSS Center now occupies the entire second floor area, five times larger than its
former location.
KSS will then offer additional crash courses starting this summer. KSS Manager

Furthermore, KSS is also organizing a kiddie book club and a professional book
book club in order to promote the habit of reading among the youth and adults.
This is in answer to the prevailing problem of deteriorating interest in reading books
among students and professionals as well, in today’s computer-based technology world.

1,600 studes, mentors attend division training in journalism

Some 1,600 campus journalists joined the 2009 Campus Journalism Workshop at PNHS.
A huge crowd of 1,600 high school students and language teachers attended the 2009 Division Training Workshop for School Paper Advisers and Campus Journalists held at the Pangasinan National High School (PNHS), Lingayen, Sept. 2-4.
With the theme, “The Millennium Development Goals Uniting the Nation to Fight Against Poverty Through Responsible Campus Journalism,” the seminar-workshop was highlighted by lectures on photojournalism, news writing, sports writing, editorial writing, copyreading and headline writing, editorial cartooning, and radio script writing.

Feature writers filled the PNHS Library.
Simultaneous lecture sessions were conducted at different venues within the PNHS Campus. Writeshops followed afterwards and students’ outputs were evaluated by the discussants.
Dr. Lourdes D. Servito, B.S. Journalism Cum Laude and KSS Consultant, lectured on feature writing to a group of around 400 students that jampacked the PNHS Library.

Critiquing of the students’ articles and selection of the best writers in each category were done by the lecturers, so as to help the campus writers improve their works by identifying and analyzing their strong points and common errors, as well.

Servito congratulates the top 15 best feature writers.
The top 15 best feature writers in English and in Filipino were awarded certificates of excellence by the KSS Learning Center as a gesture of encouragement and inspiration for the young writers.

Servito speaks at Campus Journalism Workshop

KSS Consultant/Campus Journalism Trainor, Dr. Lourdes D. Servito, discussed some tips on writing features during the Division Campus Journalism Seminar-Workshop held Sept 1, at Lingayen I Central School (LICS), Lingayen, Pangasinan.
Some 1,600 kids — Grade 2 to Grade 6 pupils from the public and private elementary schools of the Division of Pangasinan I attended the 3-day workshop, Sept. 1-3.
Local media practitioners and other veteran school paper advisers and administrators lectured on the different journalistic writing — news, editorial, sports, copyreading, headline writing, editorial cartooning, photjournalism, and radio broadcasting as well.
The aforecited lectures were conducted simlutaneously at strategic conference halls within the LICS campus. Feature Writing was tackled by Dr. Servito at the LICS District Conference Center with around 200 young feature writers and their school paper advisers.

Writing workshops followed after each lecture and the pupils’ outputs were marked and checked by the discussants.
To help the beginning writers improve their writing styles, Dr. Servito pointed out the strong points and the weak points, as well, duting the critiquing session.
The top ten feature writers in English and in Filipino, respectively, were awarded Certificates of Excellence by Dr. Servito. Servito’s KSS Learning Center provided the certificates for the 20 best feature writers of Pangasinan Division I, elementary level.

KSS SELA Manager Speaks on Editorial Writing

Like mother like daughter. That’s what they commonly say. But Dr. Lourdes D. Servito, the Mom, will always say, she is proud that her daughter has become better than she is, in campus journalism.
KSS SELA Manager, Maria Dolour Servito-Navarra, the daughter who is a graduate of International Cultural Studies major in Communications and Journalism publicly acknowledges that her Mom was her coach, mentor, and trainor. While the Mom graduated a bachelor’s degree in Journalism (Cum Laude) in a local university, the daughter graduated Magna Cum Laude in Brigham Young University Hawaii, U.S.A.
Last year, Maria Dolour lectured in Feature Writing at the Pangasinan National High School during the Division Campus Journalism Workshops in Lingayen, Pangasinan.
This time, ten years after graduating from high school, she was back to her Alma Mater, Mapandan National High School, Mapandan, Pangasinan as a resource person in Editorial Wiriting during the two-day District-Based Seminar Workshop in Campus Journalism, Aug. 27-28.
The seminar-workshop attended by some 100 elementary and high school student writers of Mapandan District was also a reunion of successful alumni of Mapandan NHS as the chosen lecturers: Maria Dolour, Editor Class ’98, for editorial writing; Marlon Perado, Cartoonist Class ’99; and Caesar Francis Calimlim, Editor Class 2000, with their former language teachers, Gloria Franco Soriano and Rowena Caberto Casta, now Head Teachers of Filipino and English Departments, respectively, as organizers of the seminar.
About seven years ago, the first principal of Mapandan NHS was no less than Dr. Servito who organized the first school publications in the aforementioned school; the Mapandan Star, and Ang Pandan. Dr. Servito is now the Principal IV of Calasiao Comprehensive National High School.
